Hamlet Response Journal: Act 1 Scenes 1-5
1. At the point, I feel the play is getting more and more mysterious. The problem are becoming more tangled up. I was puzzled as I read whether the ghost was an evil spirit or the dead king. It makes me want to find out the truth about the king's mysterious dead. Actually I like mysterious and detective stories and Shakespeare's Hamlet made me feel like I'm Hamlet, finding out the truth as the story goes on.
2. a) Not long after his father's dead, Hamlet knew about his mother and uncle's marriage and was upset. He would have been frustrated that the only person left that he trust and respect, his mother, was actually betraying his father and him. So he have no one to talk and express his thoughts. For me, as the only child, I feel lonely from time to time when I have no one to talk to. It's quite irritating when you want to say something, but you have no one to listen to you.
b) Polonius and Laertes gave advice to Ophelia. In a family, family members should help each others, not just depend on someone. In my family, though i don't have any siblings, my parents always give me advice about life. Parents have past through their lives longer than us. They know more about the outside world than us. So as a child, we should listen and obey our parents' advice because they are usually helpful
c) After Hamlet heard the story about the ghost that looks like his father, he wanted to find out. As a result, he stay the night and wait for the ghost to come. When Hamlet first met the ghost, it was hard to recognize whether the ghost was and evil spirit or really his dead father's spirit. Horatio, the soldier, warned Hamlet not to get involve with the ghost. However, Hamlet decided to risk his life and listen to the ghost. Sometimes we need to risk our lives just to get what we want. Though it might hurt, but it's worth to know the truth.When I have something that bother me, I must find out by myself the solutions. I don't like when things keep on bothering me.
3. Shakespeare created poetic conversions in his play. He also let the readers imagine the images of the scenery. He used words and phrases that described visible pictures. He also used humors in his play. He likes to use words and phrases that have more than one meaning.Not only that, he even combine words to make them funny, yet understandable. The funny word is like "Yesternight," which actually means yesterday night. To me, as a reader, though he used Old English, it is still understandable through his descriptions and wordplay.

Sometimes I got puzzled by the Old English he used in his play. I also wondered as I read why the characters are acting or responding in that ways.

Spectator Sport: Flight or Fright
My heart begins to race as we reach the grandiose airport. For the past two hours, I have been wide-awaked and excited. It has been a long time since I went aboard. My parents wish me to have safe and fun trip. My mom, who was especially worried about letting her daughter to go alone for the first time, gave me a tight hug. “Mom, don’t worry. I’ll take good care of myself. I’ll contact you when I can, I promise.” So I head into the airport gate, pulling along my huge suitcase. It is almost midnight so there aren't many people at the airport. The airport is so pacific that my heavy suitcase's wheels make screeching sound with the concrete floor all along the way. However the sound didn't bother me. All I think about is the trip waiting ahead. I drag my luggage all the way to the last row to check in and receive my boarding ticket. Then I go to the departure and pass through some security checks.
There
are lots of duty free shops opening, but not many people went in. I could even
count the number of people in the shops! Well, it’s an hour before
the flight arrives so I decide to stroll around. People are walking around and texting
on their phone. There is strident sound of message popping every single second. 'Beep,
beep!' And my heart goes, 'Thud, thud.' I feel so excited that I can’t stand
still. Not only me seem to be excited, the two girls in front of me chitchat
cheerfully. “It’s gonna be fun.” “I feel like flying on my feet now.”
I could
smell different scent of fragrance that came out of the shop from time to time.
Among the assertive smell of fragrance, was a smell of coffee. The mellow businessman in grey
tuxedo is carefully sipping from the mug. The vapor of the coffee is slowly
drifting from the cup and spread into the air. Even I, who doesn’t drink
coffee, sense the thirst to drink. I can imagine the taste of bitterness and
cream. Suddenly, something distracts me; ‘Attention please, passengers who are
taking the flight 656, this is the final call for you to board the plane. Thank
you.’
Huh, flight 656? That’s my flight. Uh, oh!
